High Five: Donny Schatz Wins Gerdau Magic City Showdown for Fifth Straight Year at Nodak Speedway

by Tony Veneziano

MINOT, N.D. — August 28, 2016 — It took Donny Schatz until his seventh start to win at his home track of Nodak Speedway in Minot, North Dakota with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series. Since that victory in 2012, he been undefeated in the Gerdau Magic City Showdown. Schatz extended his win streak at Nodak Speedway to five, after leading flag-to-flag on Sunday night at the three-eighths-mile.

Schatz started second and on the initial start ran second to pole sitter Logan Schuchart, but the first caution flag of the night flew before the lap was complete. That led to a complete restart and on the second start, Schatz was able to dive under Schuchart on the front straightaway to officially lead the first lap. Schatz was in traffic just five laps into the race and like his win on Friday night at River Cities Speedway, he masterfully weaved his way through the lapped machines.

“They are all special and they are all good,” said Schatz of his five wins at Nodak Speedway. “The trophies here are awesome and so are the people. Everything about this place is great. I’ll tell you what’s really great, and that is this race team. These guys (on my crew) deserve to be standing here. The race car they prepare each day is incredible. I’m the lucky guy that gets to drive it and looks good. Their hard work is what pays off and gets us to victory lane.”

With just two laps remaining in the 35-lap contest, a red flag flew, setting up a green-white-checker restart to determine the outcome. Schatz would use a strong restart to stay out front and opened a bit of a lead on the final circuit.

“I was thinking, ‘Air don’t go out of these tires,’” said Schatz, of the red flag. “We run bleeders and when you get heat in the tires it lets the air down and the tires then cool down. They get a little wormy after that. They were a little wormy after that red flag, but they were able to get us a win anyway.”

The win for Schatz helped him complete a sweep of the three races for the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series in his home state of North Dakota for the second straight. Schatz now has won 18 times overall with the series in North Dakota. The win was the 20th of the season for the seven-time and defending series champion, who has now won at least 20 races in four consecutive years.

“It doesn’t get any better than that,” said Schatz of winning in North Dakota. “When you are a kid, like these kids here in the crowd and you dream of doing something, that’s me. I’m standing here living my dream. Everybody all the times asks me how I am doing and I’m living my dream. Thank you fans for being part of it.”

Jason Johnson lined up eighth and used a late-race charge to finish second. A strong restart on lap-10, moved him up a couple of spots and pit him in a torrid battle with David Gravel for third. Johnson was able to take third on lap-15 and began to work on Schuchart for second. Another strong restart propelled Johnson to second as he set his sights on Schatz.

“We started a little bit further back, so we gambled with set-up,” said Johnson of his Priority Aviation team. “We’ve been searching a little bit and the guys definitely hit it right tonight. We had a really fast Maxim race car. Once we got to second, I was definitely wanting a restart. Donny (Schatz) is one of the best in the industry right now and he’s tough. He definitely makes us step up our game each night.”

On the green-white-checker restart, Johnson was able to look under Schatz in turns one and two, as he about pulled even with the leader, but could quite get enough of a run to attempt a pass. The second-place finish for Johnson was his 13th top-five finish of the season.

“I needed to get to him and I couldn’t quite clear him,” shared the 2016 Knoxville Nationals winner. “One thing about Donny is that he’ll race you clean, so I wanted to race him clean. Once we came down the back straightaway he had a little more momentum and our only chance was maybe if he would have bobbled, but that doesn’t happen very often.”

Daryn Pittman, who fell back to seventh at one point, during the 35-lap race, also made a late-race charge to finish third in the Great Clips No. 9. Pittman started sixth and over the second half of the race was able to pick up a number of positons on his way to his 36th top-five finish of the season.

“That was a fun race tonight,” said Pittman. “It was great track prep. From the driver’s seat it was pretty exciting and a lot of fun to drive. It took me too long to run the top in (turns) one and two. Once I was able to do that, I was making a lot of speed and down the back straight with a lot more mile an hour.”

Logan Schuchart continued his strong 2016 season by finishing fourth, which was his 10th top-five finish of the season. David Gravel crossed the line fifth, with Brad Sweet sixth. Joey Saldana was seventh, followed by Jacob Allen, who turned in an eighth-place run to put both Shark Racing cars in the top-10. Paul McMahan was ninth, with Dominic Scelzi rounding out the top-10.

The World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series returns to action on Friday, September 2 and Saturday, September 3 in the Outlaw Energy Showdown at Skagit Speedway in Alger, Washington.

Donny Schatz to sign commemorative posters on Sunday at Nodak Speedway

MINOT, N.D. — August 25, 2016 — The 2016 season marks the 20th year that Donny Schatz has been on the road with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series. To celebrate this special occasion, Schatz will be signing commemorative posters this Sunday, August 28, at the “Carousel Pub” under the grandstands at Nodak Speedway in his hometown of Minot, North Dakota from 3:00-5:00 p.m., prior to that night’s racing event for the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series.

“To be able to meet the fans on race day is going to be awesome,” said Schatz. “I’m looking forward to seeing a lot of familiar faces and hopefully they come out and see us.”

Over the last 20 years, Schatz has racked up seven championships and 222 A-Feature wins with the series. Schatz sits third on the series all-time win list, behind only Hall of Famers Steve Kinser and Sammy Swindell. Over the last 10 years, Schatz has finished first or second in points each and every year.

“I’ve been around it for 20 years and I love what I do,” he said. “You keep your nose to the ground and keep doing what you love to do and here we are 20 years later. It’s been a fun 20 years and has gone by in the blink of an eye. I try to think back and have probably forgot about more fun things than people ever get to do, and that’s because of racing. I’ve always enjoyed racing and it’s what we do — traveling and racing with these guys. Hopefully I can be around for another 20 years, but that might be pushing it.”

Schatz was victorious at Nodak Speedway last year with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series for the fourth consecutive year. He leads the series this season with 18 victories, including in each of the last two races for the series, as he chases his eighth championship.

Home Sweet Home: Donny Schatz Looks Forward to Magic City Showdown at Nodak Speedway

MINOT, N.D. — August 25, 2016 Donny Schatz may live in Fargo now, but Minot, North Dakota will always be home for the seven-time and defending World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series champion. Schatz was born and raised in Minot and still spends quite a bit of time in the “Magic City.”

Schatz will return to his hometown on Sunday, August 28 as the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series visits Nodak Speedway for the Gerdau Magic City Showdown Presented by Gerdau, Schatz Crossroads, Minot Tourism and Fastlane Carwash-Minot. Schatz has won four straight World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series race at the track.

“Minot is still where my heart is at,” said Schatz. “I was excited when we first got to there with the World of Outlaws to race several years ago. Hopefully we can have a good showing like we’ve had in the past. We were decent last year and ended up winning the race, but we’d like to be a little better this go around and see if we can’t do it again.”

Schatz has had quite a bit of success in the previous 10 World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series races at Nodak Speedway. Along with his four wins, he has nine top-10 finishes, with seven of those being top-five performances. It took Schatz seven starts with the Outlaws at Nodak Speedway to win for the first time, but he has been undefeated since that triumph.

Over the years, numerous improvements have been made at three-eighths-mile Nodak Speedway, which is located at the North Dakota State Fairgrounds. The biggest of which was the construction of a brand-new state-of-the-art grandstand in 2010.

“The facility at Nodak Speedway is second to none,” he noted. “Racers talk about it all over the country and how awesome it is. It is pretty awesome to see Minot, North Dakota have a World of Outlaws show and get a good turnout each time. Every race track in America has that desire to want to have a World of Outlaws show, but not too many of them realize how much hard work actually goes into it and all that is involved. The folks at Nodak Speedway have done a great job with the race track.”

The 2016 season marks the 20th consecutive year that Schatz has been on the road full-time with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series. Over that span, he has racked up seven championships and 221 A-Feature wins with the series.

Quick Hits: Gerdau Magic City Showdown for the World of Outlaws at Nodak Speedway

MINOT, N.D. — August 23, 2016The World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series is in the midst of the stretch run of the season that takes the series north and then west as around 25 nights of racing remain, before crowing a champion. Donny Schatz leads the series into Nodak Speedway, followed by David Gravel, Brad Sweet and Daryn Pittman. Gravel, Sweet and Pittman are separated by just four points, as they battle for the second spot in the standings. This edition of Quick Hits sets the stage for the Gerdau Magic City Showdown Presented by Gerdau, Schatz Crossroads, Visit Minot and Fastlane Carwash-Minot for the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series at Nodak Speedway on Sunday, August 28.

What a streak

It may have taken Schatz, who was born and raised in Minot, seven tries to win his first World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series race at his home track of Nodak Speedway, but since that victory, he has gone undefeated in the following four races at the track. Schatz led nine laps en route to winning last year over Daryn Pittman and Paul McMahan. In 10 World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series starts at Nodak Speedway, Schatz has nine top-10 finishes, with seven of those being top-five performances, including the four wins. Schatz heads to his home with a series-leading 18 A-Feature wins this season, including in the most recent two World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series events.

Meet and greet

The 2016 season marks the 20th year that Schatz has been on the road with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series. To celebrate this special occasion, the seven-time and defending series champion, will be signing commemorative posters on race day, Sunday, August 28, at the “Carousel Pub” under the grandstands at Nodak Speedway from 3:00-5:00 p.m.

Solid record

Joey Saldana, who won at Nodak Speedway with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series in 2010, has eight top-10 finishes in 10 starts at the three-eighths-mile. Saldana finished third in the inaugural World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series event at Nodak Speedway in 2006. He bettered that in 2009 with a runner-up finish and picked up a win the following year. Saldana has a six-race top-10 streak going at the track, until last season, when he finished 12th, after running out of fuel late in the race. The veteran driver has four wins this season and has 98 in his career with the Outlaws, as he looks to add his name an illustrious list of drivers that have won 100-plus A-Feature wins with the series.

Building a notebook

Shane Stewart has made three starts with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series at Nodak Speedway in his career and has finished in the top-10 in each and every race. The Oklahoma native, who now calls the Indianapolis area home, made his debut at the track in 2008, finishing ninth. Stewart finished a career-best third in 2012 at Nodak Speedway. In his return to the track last year, he came home eighth. Stewart, who has five wins this season, is in the midst of his second full season on the road with the Larson Marks Racing team, which is co-owned by NASCAR drivers Kyle Larson and Justin Marks.

Chasing another win

Daryn Pittman was victorious with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series at Nodak Speedway for the first time in 2007, in the second-ever series race at the track. The 2013 series champion, who drives for Kasey Kahne Racing, finished second last year at Nodak Speedway, which marked his second top-five finish. Pittman has five top-10 runs in six starts at the three-eighths-mile. This season, the veteran driver has seven wins, which is tied for second-most in the series with Gravel and Sweet, trailing only Schatz.

Looking to rebound

Brad Sweet led 15 laps at Nodak Speedway last year, before a cut tire forced him to the work area with just eight laps remaining. The Californian was able to restart and worked his way back forward to finish ninth. Sweet has three top-10 finishes in five starts at Nodak Speedway. He finished ninth in his debut at the track in 2010 and finished a career-best sixth in 2014. Sweet has two straight top-10 finishes entering this year’s event at Nodak Speedway. The 30-year-old led the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series standings for the first four-plus months of the season and is currently third, just three points out of second, on the strength of seven A-Feature wins.

Also looking to rebound

Paul McMahan had one of the fastest, if not the fastest car at Nodak Speedway last year. After leading the first 11 laps, he had a flat tire that sent him to the work area. McMahan was able to get the tire changed and restarted at the tail of the field and charged his way back to a third-place finish. The veteran driver has three straight top-10 finishes at Nodak Speedway and has been in the top-10 in four of his last five starts at the track. Along with his third-place run last year, McMahan was fourth at the track in 2014.

Near-perfect attendance

Jason Sides has competed in nine of the 10 World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series events contested at Nodak Speedway. He has six top-10 finishes at the track, including a second-place showing in the finale of the two-night event in 2010. Sides finished fourth in the opener of that event and also ran fourth in 2010 at Nodak Speedway, as well as last year. He has one win this season, with that coming back in April at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Strong debut

David Gravel, who is having a career-year on the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series trail in 2016, finished third in his first visit to Nodak Speedway in 2014. He made his second start at the three-eighths-mile last year, qualifying for the main event. Gravel is currently second in points on the strength of seven wins and 50 top-10 finishes, of which 35 are top-five performances, in his first season driving for the CJB Motorsports team, based out of Pennsylvania.

Shark Racing on the road again

The Shark Racing team, comprised of Jacob Allen and Logan Schuchart returned to the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series trail for the third consecutive year in 2016. Driving for Hall of Famer, Bobby Allen, one of the original Outlaws, the two young drivers continue to gain experience from coast-to-coast. Schuchart scored his first-career win with the series last month at Cedar Lake Speedway in Wisconsin, after coming very close to win on a handful of occasions over the last two years. Both Schuchart and Allen have made a pair of starts at Nodak Speedway, qualifying for the main event each time.

Back for more

Jason Johnson, the reigning Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award winner with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series, made his first start at Nodak Speedway last year, finishing 10th. The native of Eunice, Louisiana, was eighth-fastest in time trials and followed that up with a second-place finish in the second heat race to earn a spot in the 30-lap main event. Johnson recently scored the biggest win of his career, taking the $150,000-to-wing Knoxville Nationals at the famed Knoxville Raceway in Iowa. Johnson, who is seventh in the series standings, has a pair of wins thus far in 2016.

Rookie contenders

Greg Wilson, the leading contender for the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series this season, has made one start in his career at Nodak Speedway. The Ohio native made the trip to North Dakota in 2013, qualifying for the main event and finishing 15th. Wilson has also raced in North Dakota at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks.

Sprint Car University

Clyde Knipp, who just graduated from high school in May, is also making a run at the rookie title on the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series circuit. The 18-year-old will be making his first visit to Nodak Speedway. He competed earlier this season in North Dakota at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks.

The series is in the midst of a very competitive season, with 16 drivers having picked up wins thus far in 2016.

Last year at Nodak Speedway, Donny Schatz, who was born and raised in Minot, extended his win streak with the series at his home track to four races. Schatz was one of three drivers that led over the course of the 35-lap race. Paul McMahan was the early leader, before Brad Sweet moved into the top spot on lap-18, when a flat tire forced McMahan to the work area. Sweet would lead until he, too, suffered a flat tire on lap-32, handing the lead back to Schatz, who would stay out front for the final four circuits.

Joey Saldana and Daryn Pittman each have won once in their careers at Nodak Speedway. In the 10 main events contested by the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series at Nodak Speedway, dating back to 2006, seven different drivers have been victorious. Schatz didn’t pick up his first win until his seventh start with the series at the track, which came in 2012. Since that win, he has been undefeated at Nodak Speedway.

David Gravel currently is second in points and has won a career-high seven A-Feature events thus far in 2016. Brad Sweet, who led the standings for the first few months of the season, sits third, and also has won seven races. Pittman, who is Sweet’s teammate at Kasey Kahne Racing, is just three markers behind Sweet in points. Saldana, who has four victories this season, rounds out the current top-five in points.

Shane Stewart is sixth in points, less than 25 markers out of the top-five. Stewart has five wins thus far in 2016. Jason Johnson, who earned the biggest win of his career last weekend, claiming the $150,000 Knoxville Nationals is seventh in points and has two wins in 2016. Logan Schuchart, who scored his first-career World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series win last month in Wisconsin is eighth in points, followed by Jason Sides, who also has one win this season. Paul McMahan rounds out the top-10, while third-year driver Jacob Allen is 12th in the standings.

Greg Wilson from Ohio is the leading contender this year for the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series. He picked up the second win of his career with the Outlaws earlier this season in Charlotte. Clyde Knipp, a teenager from Missouri, is also contesting the majority of the schedule as a rookie.
